The PEGS Tour
The PEGS system provides you with an easy to use tool to encourage children to achieve their responsibilities and at the same time develop important character traits. The system consists of a detailed manual, sturdy board with grooved wooden pegs, and colorful vinyl disks. PEGS is centrally placed to function as the family's task and management headquarters. Each child is assigned a column on the pegboard and chores are assigned to that child according to their age and ability. Progress is tracked daily as kids flip their disks to designate completion of tasks.
The top portion of the board is devoted to chores, laid out in the approximate order they are done throughout the day. The bottom half of the pegboard is devoted to character.
ChoresBack to top
The top portion of the board is devoted to chores, laid out in the approximate order they are done throughout the day. Each child hangs the disks of their chores vertically in their column below their names. You can make the row as simple or as complex as each child's age and ability require. Because the disks have pictures, even non-readers can understand what they need to do. The disks contain a matte finish inside the simple drawing that is colorable so your children get to help design their own disks.
When the job is completed, the disk is turned over. Your kids will know what is expected, and you'll know what has been done and what still needs to be accomplished.
PEGS includes 3 different kinds of chore sheets:
- Sheet A - Personal Chore Disks
This sheet has 3 customizable disks and 9 disks of basic chores that all kids would potentially need to do. Small systems contain 2 sheets; medium systems contain 4 sheets.
- Sheet B - Basic Household Jobs
This sheet includes 12 disks representing basic household jobs. These jobs are meant to be rotated among your children. You receive 1 per PEGS systems.
- Sheet C - Advanced Household Jobs
This sheet includes 12 disks representing more advance household jobs. You receive 1 per PEGS system.
Should you need more of any one individual disk, you can always order additional disks.
CharacterBack to top
The bottom portion of the PEGS board is designated to address your child's character - the unique feature that sets our system apart. Every parent knows that "getting it all done" isn't all there is to growing up! We've divided character issues into 3 categories: Attitude, Behavior, and Communication.
PEGS includes green disks, called "bonuses" that are used to reinforce positive character traits so you can "catch your kids being good." The concept that PEGS reinforces, is that the more you notice, appreciate, and verbalize good behavior, the more of it you will see. What you pay attention to grows! The bonus is a visible means to reinforce what you are saying as you reinforce desired character traits. Each bonus disk "earned" becomes an example of good character - a heart habit that you want to encourage and reinforce often. Because the board has depth, kids can earn many bonuses in a day.
- Attitude: "I really appreciate it when you do what I ask you to do so willingly. That is the kind of obedient attitude that helps our family run smoothly."
- Behavior: "Thank you for playing so nicely with your sister and sharing your toys. Give yourself a bonus for such cooperative behavior."
- Communication: "I noticed that you asked me about what you wanted without whining. Wow! Give yourself a bonus."
While we work at affirming our children both verbally and tangibly for right behavior, we also need to correct behavior.
PEGS gives you a gentle way to correct your child with the use of the "penalty" disk - a red NOT symbol, that reverses to blank white. Giving your child a penalty disk is a tangible and visible means to correct character issues that serves as a first step in the correction process. Based on your parenting philosophy, you will incorporate other corrective measures to discipline your child.
The penalty is given to the child for undesirable character issues and placed in the appropriate category of the offense - Attitude, Behavior, or Communication. Once the penalty disks has been given, children are required to correct the offense. When done, the penalty can be reversed or removed to the plain white side - reflecting a fresh start.
The PEGS manual (CD included in the kit) provides you with a Character Trait Worksheet to assist you in defining the desired character traits you want to work on as a family as well as what consequences you will assign when a child misbehaves.
System ComponentsBack to top
Board, Pegs and Magnets
PEGS comes in 2 sizes to assist both small and large families:
- Small for 1-2 children (9" x 24) 4 rows across, 12 down
- Medium for 3-4children (13" x 24") 6 rows across, 12 down
If your family is larger than 4 children, purchase more than one system to accommodate more children. The board is lightweight plastic, so you can hang it on the refrigerator or the wall if you prefer. The system includes grooved wooden pegs that are pushed into the hole from the back. The grooves hold disks and allow depth to the board, so you can stack several disks on one peg if needed and the disks won't fall off. Magnets for hanging the board on the refrigerator are also included.
If for some reason the standard kit is not suitable to your needs, you can customize the system to fit your family. All kits receive the same components, just more disks for larger families.
NOTE: 1 sheet = 12 individual disks
Each kit receives one yellow labeling sheet to outline the structure/categories for the system. Included in the label categories are the ABC's of character traits to address: Attitude, Behavior, and Communication, which are hung on the bottom 3 pegs of your board. A digital clock grid label is also included to add a time element to your system.

Each system includes 3 types of Chore Disk Sheets.
- Sheet A - Personal Chore Disks, are provided for each child. You will get 2 sheets in the small kit, and 4 in the medium kit.
- Sheet B - Basic Household chores. You will get one sheet per system.
- Sheet C - Advanced Household chores, are considered rotatable chores. You will get one sheet per system.
All chore disks are colorable so your children can customize their system. Based on age and ability you outline the chores for each child. A 3 year old might have only 3 chores whereas a ten year old, might have 7-8 chores per day. The board allows optimum flexibility to suit your family.
- Bonus Disks - Each system includes blank green bonus disks (6 per child) to be used as the tangible "reinforcer" of desired character traits.
- Penalties Disks - Each system includes penalty disks (6 per child) - the red NOT symbol to help a child visualize the NOT ACCEPTABLE character traits. When reversed the disk is plain white to illustrate a resolved penalty.
