How can I stop nagging and screaming at my kids?

How can I stop nagging and screaming at my kids?

You need to evaluate why you scream and consider if PEGS is part of reducing those reasons. If you scream because of lack of structure and chaos in your household, PEGS can assist you by helping to set up that structure. Kids typically thrive in structure and seem much more cooperative when expectations are clearly defined and consistently reinforced.

How can I teach my children to be more self-governing?

How can I teach my children to be more self-governing?

As kids take charge of their own responsibilities they experience success - and flourish in the warmth of their parent's appreciation. Starting to teach kids early by creating structure and routine that is consistently reinforced, will help children to grow the habits of becoming more responsible. This character fruit takes time (years) but the rewards of raising responsible children are worth it.

At what age should I start teaching my children to do chores?

At what age should I start teaching my children to do chores?

The simple answer is EARLY! Most children are capable and usually quite willing, to do chores between 2 ½ - 3 years. Their chores should be very simple and perhaps initially require you to do it along side them. A simple formula is one chore for every year. But take heart, it is never too late to start to teach your child responsibility. I started when my children were 7, 5, and 3 and it worked wonders in reducing the chaos of my household. PEGS gives you a very visible means to start teaching small children by providing pictures for non-readers.

It's important that you and your family START SIMPLY with the PEGS system. Everyone's first experience should be one of success. Pick the area of greatest need and start there. Perhaps you'll want to work at getting only the morning routine nailed down, so you'll hang only those disks on the board. Maybe obedience is a big issue, so you'll use your bonuses and penalties only for that. As kids (and parents!) become familiar with the system, it's easy to expand.

How will I know what disks to hang where and how to make PEGS work?

The PEGS CD manual is very thorough and will guide you through the process of setting up your board. Remember though, that planning is a key to success. Read the materials thoroughly, plan what you will work on first with your family and how you will do it - before you begin. Planning first = successful implementation later. In the manual we have Master Chore and Character sheets to assist you in outlining your expectations.

How can I learn to be a more positive parent?

How can I learn to be a more positive parent?

Practice....Any one can grow to be more positive by paying attention to what comes out of their mouth and the tone in which it is said. Seek to verbally affirm each of your children 3-5 times daily. As you see the delight in their eyes of having gained the tangible effects of your positive affirmation, you will be encouraged to stay working at becoming more positive.

How can I be sure I won't fail again at yet another chore chart?

How can I be sure I won't fail again at yet another chore chart?

There are no guarantees for simple success....PEGS is a tool to assist you, but you have to be willing to use the system and persevere. PEGS is very motivating to children and kids usually thrive with structure. You may find them asking you to stay on (or get back on) the program because they enjoy understanding what is expected of them, versus an arbitrary program that is unpredictable. Schedule realistic breaks and don't be too hard on yourself if you get off track. Just reevaluate and try again. No-one....I repeat NO-ONE can be consistent 24/7/365.

What if my family needs don't work with your system?

What if my family needs don't work with your system?

One of the great assets of PEGS is that you can customize your system to meet your unique needs. We can exchange out disks or add disks to the customary kit so you get what you need. You can orient the board horizontally instead of vertically, add colored disks to suit your stylish and color sensitive child, use it for home-schooling, and much more. What if I have older children?

What if I have older children?

PEGS seems most appealing to younger children (0-13), but several families put teens on as well. Consider including parents on the system so it becomes the family chore system, and not just for the "kids". You can also use blank white disks that list the chore, if the picture disks feel too young for a teen.
